Assigning and rollover
Assigning is how you tell a line how much it can spend. Rollover decides what happens to the money that’s left, or missing, when the period ends.
How Available is worked out
Section titled “How Available is worked out”For every line and period:
Available = money carried over from the last period + Assigned + Activity
Activity is negative when you spend, so spending lowers Available. The side panel shows this sum for any line under Breakdown.
Assign money to a line
Section titled “Assign money to a line”- Click the amount in the line’s Assigned column. A window opens with the line’s name at the top.
- Enter the amount under Assigned.
- Under Amount applies to, choose This period only or From now on.
- Press Enter or click Save.
This period only or from now on
Section titled “This period only or from now on”Every line has a usual amount that repeats, and any period can make an exception.
- From now on sets the line’s usual amount, its baseline. It applies to the period you’re viewing and every period after it, until a later period sets a different From now on amount. Earlier periods keep what they had.
- This period only is a one-off. Only the period you’re viewing uses it, and the next period goes back to the usual amount. The line shows an override badge in that period.
For example, you set Groceries to 400 From now on in March. April, May and every month after start with 400. In May you’re hosting guests, so you set 500 This period only. June is back to 400.
The window starts on From now on, unless the period already has a one-off amount. Then it starts on This period only, so a quick change doesn’t overwrite the usual amount by accident.
Go back to the usual amount
Section titled “Go back to the usual amount”When a period has a one-off amount, the window shows Use baseline under Amount applies to. Click it to remove the one-off, and the period uses the line’s usual amount again.
Assign ahead
Section titled “Assign ahead”Use the arrows next to the period at the top of the budget, or click the period to pick one from the list, to open a later period. You can assign money up to 12 periods ahead. The current period is marked Current in the list.
Rollover
Section titled “Rollover”Rollover decides what a line brings into a new period from the one before. There are three rules:
| Rule | What happens |
|---|---|
| Carry surplus (the default) | Money left in a line moves to the next period. Overspending does not. |
| Carry surplus and deficit | Both leftovers and overspending move to the next period. |
| Start fresh each period | Every line starts at zero, whatever happened before. |
Here’s what a Groceries line with 400 assigned every month starts April with:
| March ended with | Carry surplus | Carry surplus and deficit | Start fresh each period |
|---|---|---|---|
| 50 left | 450 | 450 | 400 |
| 50 overspent | 400 | 350 | 400 |
A line using Carry surplus and deficit shows a carries deficit badge.
Choose a rule for the whole budget
Section titled “Choose a rule for the whole budget”You pick the rule when you create the budget, under Rollover. To change it later:
- Click Budget settings at the top right of the budget.
- Under Rollover default, pick a rule. It saves right away.
Every line without its own rule follows the budget’s rule, in every period. Changing it recalculates those lines, past periods included.
Give a line its own rule
Section titled “Give a line its own rule”- Click the line’s Assigned amount in the period where the new rule should start.
- Pick a rule under Rollover. The hint reminds you it applies from this period on.
- Click Save.
The line keeps that rule in every later period, until you pick another one.
Where money that doesn’t roll over goes
Section titled “Where money that doesn’t roll over goes”Money that isn’t carried simply isn’t counted any more. The next period starts from the new Assigned amount.
